The drive from Voss to Gudvangen, our starting place at the Nærøyfjord, is very scenic. On our way we pass the Stalheim gorge before entering the Nærøyvalley leading down to Gudvangen at the mouth of the fjord.
The Nærøyfjord, Gudvangen and the valley leading up to Stalheim has been a popular tourism destination for almost 150 years - not without a reason – the scenery is spectacular and here we will be spending 3 days kayaking and hiking on this incredible Norway Outdoor Adventure!
At our base in Gudvangen our guide first go through the plans for the tour before we get you equipped with your personal paddle gear for the tour. Assistance with pre-trip packing and preparations are provided as necessary. All clients receive comprehensive personalized instruction and a Kayak Safety briefing before getting on the water.
If you have any luggage or belongings that you will not be needing to take with you on your trip let your guide know and they will be able to store it in our storage area.
This trip will take you to the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage area in the spectacular Nærøyfjord. We will experience all this from a Sea Kayakers and Hikers perspective. The itinerary allows you plenty of time to get to know the other people on the tour well – it is rather like a group of friends paddling together than a guided tour.
On the trip we will visit areas only accessible by kayak or boats. Late afternoon on Day 1 we arrive at our campsite for the night where we pull out our kayaks and take a well deserved rest.
After setting up camp you may relax and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the area. In the evening we enjoy a delicious barbecue dinner before relaxing around the camp fire.
On the morning of Day 2 we pack our daypacks after breakfast and begin our hike up the valley above Dyrdal. Our aim is to reach the highlands and summits above the fjords and get a spectacular view of the fjord from above. For walking the tracks, firm footwear is required, but hiking boots are not essential.
During May, June and parts of July we are likely to hike on snow up in the mountains as we go past the tree border – the landscape and vegetation is rapidly changing up here – we pass melt water lakes, snow patches and waterfalls as we make our way up towards the summits.
The hike climbs about 1200 meters in just over 10 kilometers, passing a lovely mountain lake along the way. The reward at the top is an eye-popping panorama South overlooking the Nærøyfjord towards Bakkanosi.
U-shaped glacier-valleys are clearly visible in the upper landscape as we reach the plateau above the timberline. It’s truly one of the best views in the whole UNESCO World heritage area and well worth the workout.
The upper trails may not be snow free until as late as late June, but the brief summer season brings a spectacular and colourful display of subalpine wildflowers – on many tours we collect wild blueberries, strawberries and fill our water bottles with clean water from streams and rivers along our trail.
After reaching the tops and we enjoy some great views of the fjord, some 1000 meters below us, before we head back down to our campsite where we will spend another night with dinner and campfire after the days hiking. We spend the night at camp in our tents and get some well deserved rest.
After a leisurely breakfast on Day 3 we break up camp, pack up our kayaks and get back on the water late morning. We continue kayaking north throughout the Nærøyfjord and explore the magnificent cliff faces found here – hopefully we spot some seals along our way. We are entering a part of the fjord where take-outs are rare and will visit one of the more majestic waterfalls entering the fjord in the outer part of the Nærøyfjord We stop for lunch at early afternoon when we come over a suitable pull out.
Mid afternoon we arrive in Undredal, a remote village at the Aurlandsfjord, where we finish kayaking and pull out our kayaks . We will be able to enjoy a well deserved ice cream in the sun before the company shuttle arrives and return us back to our base in Gudvangen. Here we unload and sort out our personal items.
Arriving back at Voss late afternoon/ early evening you may choose to stay in Voss or travel onwards to Bergen or Oslo, we will be happy to assist you making plans as a part of your booking process or you can browse our website for advise and information.
All meals are included. We can cater for most dietary requirements and vegetarians are welcome. Special dietary needs need to be advised in advance. Meals are fresh, generous and varied.
If you are able to spend 3 days this is our recommended way of experiencing the fjords. Escape the crowds and come along for a genuine experience with good company and all provided!
